Kerrang! summed up Bad Nerves' debut album in one line: "a dozen gloriously messy punk rock scatterbombs in less than half an hour." Two of those songs, "Baby Drummer" and "Palace," are on U-Rock®'s WURN-dB Underground playlist.
A text that caught fire
Bad Nerves are, in writer Joe Bonomo's words, an "Essex-hatched, London-based band." The line-up is Bobby Nerves (Bobby Bird) on vocals, William Phillipson and George Berry on guitars, Jonathan Poulton on bass and Samuel Thompson on drums. Bonomo says the band started in early 2015 "after a casual text between Nerves and Phillipson about starting a punk band caught fire." Louder dates the line-up coming together to around 2016. In Bird's telling to Louder, he had come through "various doomed metal and indie bands" and gave up the drums to sing.
It wasn't meant to be a live band. "We originally only intended this to be a recording project, but then we got carried away," Nerves told Unclear Magazine. He said early touchstones were Radioactivity and Jay Reatard. Bonomo adds that the band "swiftly found religion via the Ramones, the Clash, and like-spirited bands."
Bad Nerves (2020)
The self-titled debut came out on 20 November 2020 on Killing Moon. Bonomo says the band self-financed it. Kerrang!'s Paul Travers gave it 4/5. He wrote that "the spirit of the Ramones lives on in East London," noting that "Baby Drummer is even ushered in with a time-honoured '1-2-3-4'." The formula, in his words: "take lean garage punk riffs, triple the speed, then throw them in a blender with a full complement of roughshod vocal harmonies, hand-claps and simple, catchy choruses." He compared them to the Dickies and Jay Reatard. "Baby Drummer," he wrote, "is about looking for something new to come along and sweep you away in a wave of excitement."
Punkinfocus quoted DJ Gary Crowley calling them a "200 miles-an-hour Supergrass." It also printed the album's 12-track listing, which includes "Palace."
Still Nervous
Louder says the pandemic lockdown forced the band to concentrate on music, and that Bird found himself having real fun writing songs. Their first headline tour followed once restrictions eased. In 2023 Nerves told Unclear Magazine he had written everything himself for the next record, with 23 new songs in the works. Bonomo says that second album, Still Nervous, was engineered, mixed and produced by Mike Curtis, and that "the sound is bigger, the ceiling higher." In his view, "Bad Nerves sounds like a famous band, though they're not (yet)."
Why it matters on U-Rock®
Bad Nerves self-financed their debut and won their audience show by show. Nerves told Unclear the following grew more on streaming than on social media: "I guess people that listen to Bad Nerves are too busy living to give a shit about Instagram." "Baby Drummer" and "Palace" are on the WURN-dB Underground playlist. Turn them up.
U-Rock® play data: no plays logged in the BROADCAST or CORE histories (2026-07-02 to 2026-10-12). The band appears on the WURN-dB Underground Spotify playlist.
