The John Butler Trio are an Australian roots rock band led by guitarist and singer John Butler. U-Rock® has logged 1,793 plays of their song "Funky Tonight." (The station's library lists the band as "John Bulter Trio.")

Independent and No. 1

According to Wikipedia, the band formed in Fremantle in 1998. The line-up has changed several times around Butler. Three (2001) went platinum, and Sunrise Over Sea (2004), Grand National (2007) and April Uprising (2010) all debuted at No. 1 in Australia and went platinum. Since 2002 the band's releases have come out independently through Jarrah Records, which Butler co-owns.

"Funky Tonight"

"Funky Tonight" came out through Jarrah in December 2006 as the lead single from Grand National. It peaked at No. 15 on the ARIA Singles Chart. The band played it at the 2007 ARIA Music Awards with Keith Urban, and that version, released as a download, reached No. 11. On the recording, Butler plays 12-string and nylon-string guitar, banjo and harmonica. The photo here is from Toronto in 2012.

Why it matters on U-Rock®

The John Butler Trio built a platinum career in Australia without a major label, and "Funky Tonight" is one reason why.
