Girly-Sound to Guyville

According to Wikipedia, Phair was born in New Haven, Connecticut, grew up mainly in the Chicago suburbs and graduated from Oberlin College in 1990. Back in Chicago, she began self-releasing cassettes under the name Girly-Sound, and they led to a deal with Matador Records. Her 1993 debut, Exile in Guyville, was widely acclaimed, and Rolling Stone has ranked it among the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

"Supernova"

Her second album, Whip-Smart (1994), debuted at No. 27. Its first single, "Supernova," was a Top 10 modern rock hit, and the video was played often on MTV. Phair performed it on the Late Show with David Letterman and on MTV's 120 Minutes, and appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone under the headline "A Rock Star Is Born." The album earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Her later albums include Whitechocolatespaceegg, the self-titled 2003 album and Soberish (2021).
