Mike Kerr: Royal Blood's Bass-Wielding Frontman Steps Into Turbowolf's "Domino"

Royal Blood's singer and bassist makes one bass sound like two instruments, and he lends that voice to Turbowolf's 2018 song Domino.

Mike Kerr is the singer and bassist of Royal Blood, the rock duo from Worthing. On U-Rock®'s WURN-dB Underground playlist he turns up as a guest, on Turbowolf's 2018 song "Domino."

The sound of one bass

According to Wikipedia, Royal Blood formed in Worthing in 2011. Kerr, born on 19 June 1990, handles vocals, bass and keyboards. Drummer Ben Thatcher is from nearby Rustington. The pair first met as teenagers around 2005 and were briefly in a four-piece called Flavour Country, where Kerr played keyboards and keytar.

Wikipedia says Royal Blood's signature sound is built around Kerr's bass: he runs it through effects pedals and amps so it sounds like an electric guitar and a bass guitar at the same time. The duo signed with Warner Chappell Music in 2013 and have released four albums: Royal Blood (2014), How Did We Get So Dark? (2017), Typhoons (2021) and Back to the Water Below (2023). Wikipedia lists a fifth, Dead Company, as due in late 2026.

"Domino"

"Domino" is on Turbowolf's third album, The Free Life, which Wikipedia dates to 9 March 2018. Punktastic reported the song's release as "Turbowolf share new song, 'Domino', feat. Royal Blood's Mike Kerr," and Wikipedia lists "Domino" as a 2018 digital single. Turbowolf are a Bristol hard-rock band that AllMusic, as quoted by Wikipedia, has called "a shape-shifting hard rock outfit ... that offers up a heady mix of punk, psych-rock, metal, and electronica." The Free Life also features Death from Above's Sebastien Grainger, on "Cheap Magic," another song on the Underground playlist.

Why it matters on U-Rock®

"Domino" brings two very different riff-makers together, one of Britain's biggest rock voices and one of its strangest hard-rock bands.
