OTTER turns an imaginary 1978 band into a real collaborative album
OTTER’s Otter Voices, Otter Rooms comes with an unusual origin story. Ken Stringfellow imagined a band that supposedly formed in Amsterdam in 1976 and made a little-heard album in 1978. That band is a fictional invention; the new ten-track album and the musicians who made it are real.
The premise lets a group of collaborators play with a history of their own making. Stringfellow describes an imagined underground group, with punk, art rock and reggae folded into a vintage musical language. The project is not an unearthed 1978 recording.
The imagined band enters the studio
Stringfellow says he produced and mixed the project in the Netherlands and portrays its bassist. Written in Music identifies Martin Otter, formerly guitarist with Sturm und Drang, as the project’s driving force. It describes a collective recording made live in the studio, with contributors adding different parts and hand-painted artwork extending the concept.
The ten tracks are “Massacre,” “When Boys Fall in Love,” “American Redeemer,” “First Star After the Storm,” “Lightness,” “Totalitarian Regime,” “Loverman,” “We All Love You,” “Lost in These Desolate Times” and “Somewhere Someone.” Written in Music also credits Stringfellow with bass and backing vocals on “When Boys Fall in Love.”
Apple Music dates the release September 24, 2026 and lists ℗ 2026 ManCat Records. Written in Music describes an October 2 release. We’re preserving that source difference rather than merging two dates into an unsupported single announcement.
The concept continues onstage
The fictional history is playful, but OTTER also has a real show on a venue calendar. De Taverne in Bergen’s official agenda lists OTTER for Saturday, December 12. The collective’s music will have another outlet beyond its invented backstory.
