Timbuk 3 were an American rock band that released six albums between 1986 and 1995. U-Rock® has logged 1,765 plays of their one big hit, "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades."

Madison to Austin

According to Wikipedia, husband and wife Pat MacDonald and Barbara Kooyman formed the band in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1984. They moved to Austin, Texas, and signed with I.R.S. Records. They briefly appeared in the 1988 film D.O.A. as a house band.

A misunderstood hit

"The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" opens their debut album, Greetings from Timbuk3, and reached the Top 20 as a single in 1986. The title came from something Barbara said in earnest: their future looked so bright they'd need sunglasses. Pat heard it as an ironic joke and wrote it down that way. Listeners treated the song as a cheerful graduation anthem, but Pat explained on VH1 that he meant it as a "grim" outlook, hinting that the bright future came from the threat of nuclear war. Why it matters on U-Rock®

Everybody thinks it's a happy graduation song, but the man who wrote it says it's grim.
