Vinyl care 101: cleaning, sleeves, storage — and what actually ruins records

Records are durable if you respect four enemies: heat, pressure, dust and bad handling.

Storage is most of the game. Vertical, always — records stored flat or leaning warp under their own weight over months. Snug but not compressed, away from radiators, attics, car trunks and sunlight. Heat is the one mistake you cannot undo.

Sleeves matter more than gadgets. Replace paper inner sleeves — they shed fibers and scratch — with poly or poly-lined sleeves. Outer sleeves keep jacket wear off the artwork your collection's value lives in.

Cleaning, in ascending order of seriousness: a carbon-fiber brush before every play removes surface dust in ten seconds and is the single best habit in vinyl. A wet clean with proper record-cleaning fluid and a microfiber cloth handles fingerprints and grime — spin-clean style bath machines do the job for whole-collection rescue jobs. Never household glass cleaner, never tap water on anything you value, never anything on the label.

Handling: edges and label only. Return the record to its sleeve immediately after play — the ten minutes it lies naked on a table is where most new scratches happen.

And the stylus: a worn needle damages every record it touches. Replace on schedule, clean it regularly, and your collection outlives you. The Library of Congress preservation guidance linked below is the deep reference.
